With my hectic travel schedule becoming dormant, I am spending a lot of time in the kitchen.
I found this recipe in one of @jamieoliver `s cookbooks. Of course I had to edit it based on my food allergies. Thank you Jamie for the inspiration!
His recipe...Must try red cabbage braised with apple, bacon and balsamic vinegar.
I am allergic to pork, so I used turkey bacon. Recipe calls for butter, I used a dairy free alternative.
Ingredients
- olive oil
- 1/2 lb of turkey bacon
- 1 tablespoon of dill seeds (his recipe calls for fennel but we didn`t have any).
- 2 apples
- 1/2 purple cabbage
- salt, pepper to season
- 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
- a dollop of dairy free butter
- parsley to garnish
Chop all ingredients. Add to sauce pan olive oil, bacon and dill seeds. When golden add cabbage, apple, salt & pepper, and vinegar. Stir all together. Cook on low heat for an hour. Serve with a dollop of butter and dried parsley.
The recipe calls for one onion but I don`t usually cook with onions. I adjusted the measurements based on my family`s taste. This dish is tasty and will please all. Serves 4. Enjoy!
If you end up making it, let me know what you think!

Whenever I eat out, whether when I am traveling or locally, I always hand the waiter my Allergic Traveler chef cards. The wait staff is always so appreciative, which makes me feel great! You know what makes me feel even better? When the wait staff says " I got you! I have allergies too!"
When they get you, they get you!

On our way down to the beach, we made a detour to see our friends at JPs Pastry. All these are gluten free, dairy free, nut free and egg free. Umm..hello?! Can you say cinnamon rolls ?! They are now up to 5 locations in NC. It`s such a great company and I love seeing them grow in our local market. Look them up and treat yourself to something extra special!

New product alert! At least new to me. No this is not a sponsored post.
I met this company years ago at a food allergy conference. It is a North Carolina family based company. These crackers are available in a variety of flavors. Unfortunately, these are the only ones that are garlic free.
It`s hard to find good gf crackers, but they mastered these beautifully. You should try them!

Thai and Chinese restaurants are never easy for me as I am allergic to soy, garlic, sesame, pork, chicken and eggs to name a few. However, it was my brother in law`s birthday and this was his place of choice (also we surprised him, so he had no idea of our presence.) The restaurant did an excellent job of making me a veggie stir fry from scratch. All sauces were already pre-made with soy and all meat was already premarinated in soy so I could not eat anything on the menu.
The dish turned out delicious and so fresh. To quote Mr. Allergic Traveler "it`s rare to see you mop up the plate!" If you have allergies and are in the area, you need to go!

It’s hard to believe that we are celebrating 15 years at Allergic Traveler. In honor of this celebration, I wanted to take a second to let you know what this means to me. It means that because of your continued support, we are able to help others communicate their allergens in more than 18 languages.
Allergic Traveler started many years ago, when we went on a cruise in the Mediterranean. We would be stopping in a minimum of 4 different counties and I had to be able to express my allergens in Greek, Italian, Croatian and French. While I took some of these languages in school, I was not fluent in all of them. I quickly reached out to my tribe (google was not very dependable back then) and asked them to help translate these allergens. Hence Allergic Traveler was born. I realized that I could not be the only one in such a predicament!
Once marketing was hired, translators were hired, web developers and printers, it was off to the races to build this business. We launched in the spring of 2011 and then I waited. I did not know what SEO was. I simply logged into my website to see if any orders had come in. It was an expensive lesson to learn but eventually we invested in social media and SEO managers. Years later, we have helped thousands of people travel to exotic destinations and eat safely. This is one of my greatest prides in my life.
A little about me, I am allergic to the following –
Eggs, nuts, mushrooms, sesame, soy, garlic, celery, chicken, pork and shellfish.
I am intolerant to dairy and gluten.
And yet, I don’t let this stop me. I have traveled to 26 countries and 37 states so far.
So, here’s to you! Keep traveling! I, along with my team, thank you for your continuous support and trust.

Happy New Year! In the south there is a tradition where you have to eat a certain meal on the 1st to represent luck and prosperity in the New Year.
The menu consists of
- collard greens (cooked in pork fat) to represent money
- pork to represent progress
- black eyed peas to represent coins (also cooked in pork)
- and cornbread to represent gold (made with eggs).
I am allergic to eggs and pork, among other things. However, my girl @catrmurphy1 made separate dishes for me with no pork or eggs, using separate utensils. See the small pots? Those are for me! When they Iove you, they get you! Lucky to start the year safely with such good friends.
Happy New Year all! May we all be surrounded by health, love, happiness and great friends!

I think by far this was my favorite meal. It may have something to do with the fact that this restaurant is owned by Canadians 😊!
I had Mahi Mahi fajitas and a watermelon spritzer. Everything was so fresh and delicious. They were able to accommodate my dietary restrictions thanks in part to my broken Spanish and my Allergic Traveler chef cards. They were so gracious and kind. If you are in the area, you should go!
